AYACHUITE JULY - Of the
Beauty..
A few thoughts and what we are upto..
Unos pensamientos y que
estamos haciendo..
So women. Women in a bustling city in India
Women in an English market town. Women in San Sebastian Rio Hondo. The space of
women. It seems we all seek it no matter where we are.
In the village where we live, the women appear
to have no space. They wake up at 5am, light the fire, wash dishes, wash
clothes, tend the chickens, the sheep, the goats, the husband. They make 5kg of
tortillas. They bathe, scold and send to school their wild children. Some go
for a daily run looking for drunk husbands, or walk miles to get food to their
husbands on faraway ranches, just to make sure its piping hot. Like all places, there is peace, there
is support, there is love. Unfortunately, there is also a high level of
domestic violence, combined with a culture that does not verbally express
itself to vulnerability.
One of my favourite times in general is the
early morning. The wake up, blessed, birdsong alone time. I go for a fresh blue
sky walk and I see Tia Sara sniffing her latest blood red geranium, chucking her
begonias. A bit further and I pass Tia Gabina finding herself in her tiny
embroidered parrots. In the afternoons, one can often see the abuelas softly
singing, weaving to the tree they are tied to, their small squat bodies in
perfect harmony with the complex concoction of sticks and thread that make up a
belt loom.
Where does this come from? This stories of
beauty in cloth and flowers? From the blessed opportunities I have received to
travel, and now live here, I realise that It is a universal, collective truth
of Women. From the quilting circles of deep Ghana to the stitch and bitch of
East London..this space of art, colour and medicine smells. There is expression
without interference, without judgement. It is the original art therapy.
Suddenly realising all of this I see several
things. My highly prized, over bloated verbose background suddenly goes down
several pegs in the face of the rich, multifaceted expressions of body
language, needle in cloth, tending to flowers. Many of the people of these
mountains cannot read verbal literature, but have a giant encyclopedia of over
1000 plants and mushrooms just by looking, smelling, touching. Words, it seems, came in much later and
smashed over all the forms of expression as 'The Most Worthy'. All to satisfy
useless power struggle. Crazy.
As I wake up to this beautiful life every day,
Im also just becoming aware of the deep healing of telling the story in this
way. Only now I realise, when I first arrived years ago, with my grand
aspirations of making great sweeping changes…I had no idea what this quiet,
nested womens world would open inside of me…….me embroidering? Ha! I was born to be on the frontline! With
my Pickaxe godamn it!
A decade later and
I am to be found at my happiest with 2 purring cats, a big mug of tea, covered
in embroidery threads. Go figure..
De La Belleza.
Y así las mujeres… En una bulliciosa ciudad en
India.
no tener espacio.
Uno de mis momentos favoritos en general, es muy temprano en la mañana;
De repente, reflexionando sobre todo esto, puedo entender varias cosas;
*Stitch and Bitch: Bordado en punto.

Capture
-
We
are designing a simple, portable rainwater capture system that, because we are
soon moving to a ranch, is effective but doesn’t need too much permanent
infrastructure – lets see what our inventive team can concoct from a couple or
water tanks, some wire and some plastic tubes…
